Treating Varicose Veins with Varithena®

Posted: October 15, 2020 | Revised: October 15, 2020

Varithena is a gentle foam sclerosant treatment that improves the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins. In clinical studies, the majority of patients experienced results after just one treatment.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are large, often bluish, twisting leg veins and bulge above the surface of the skin. They are caused by faulty, inefficient vein valves.

It is important to note that varicose veins are not always visible. Other symptoms include aching and throbbing pain, leg cramps, itching, swelling, heavy legs, and Restless Leg Syndrome.

Living with varicose veins can be difficult, but treatment doesn’t have to be.

How Does Varithena Work?

We start by applying a local anesthetic and then inject Varithena into the varicose vein using a tiny needle and ultrasound guidance. The micro-foam then spreads evenly and causes the vein to seal shut. After that, the sealed vein will shrink and the body will absorb the bad vein in the following months.

The treatment may require multiple sessions depending on the severity of your varicose veins. For more information, check out this great breakdown by Boston Scientific!

What Happens After Treatment?

Varithena is a minimally invasive procedure, which means a fast recovery and less discomfort. There are no incisions, sedation, or general anesthesia.

The most common side effects are leg pain or discomfort and injection site bruising, but patients can walk right after the treatment. Patients can resume most of their normal activities the same day.
