What are Conservative Measures?

Conservative measures are often the first step in managing chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). While these measures don’t treat the underlying issue of CVI, they do provide symptomatic relief and slow the development of other problems caused by CVI. They can also aid your recovery after treating varicose veins and spider veins.

Conservative Measures Include:

  • Use of compression socks and sleeves
  • Anti-inflammatory medicine
  • Regular low-impact exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Elevating legs during the day

Compression Socks and Sleeves

Compression therapy is very effective when used during treatment, for long-term therapy after treatment, and for preventative care. Socks help prevent blood from pooling in the leg veins by using graduated compression, which is weakest at the thigh and strongest at the ankle, to aid blood flow. They are also used by athletes to aid their performance and ease leg pain.

Compression socks are for everyone! They come in a host of styles, from fun and bold designs to muted colors that blend in with your skin. We can help you find the right brand and style.

Lifestyle Changes

If you’re on your feet or sitting at your desk for most of the day, you need to elevate your legs periodically. This will reduce the pressure on your veins and improve your blood flow.

Regular low-impact exercise, such as walking or cycling, can also improve your circulation. If you’re overweight, that can put extra pressure on the veins in your legs and make the symptoms of CVI worse.
