1. Initial Evaluation: During this visit a medical history and physical is performed in conjunction with a limited ultrasound exam is performed to assess the extent of your vein disease. This visit takes approximately 45-60 minutes. For patients that have exclusive surface/reticular vein disease (without saphenous involvement), subsequent ultrasound mapping is usually not necessary and surface vein treatment may be initiated that day.
2. Ultrasound Mapping: For patients that have a saphenous vein source as the origin of their disease, venous ultrasound mapping is a critical step to determine the pattern of abnormal saphenous veins that are contributing to the appearance and symptoms you are experiencing. This can be performed on one or both legs depending on your symptoms. Due to the thorough nature of the exam, the ultrasound usually takes approximately 1 hour to complete.
3. Treatment Plan: After mapping, Dr. Schoonover will explain the results of your ultrasound mapping. Then we will discuss your options for treatment, including risks and benefits.
4. Financial Consultation: Our billing experts will go over the process for submitting an insurance claim with you. Authorization from insurance companies for your treatment can take 3 days to 6 weeks depending on your insurance carrier. Certain insurance may also require a trial of compression stockings prior to initiating treatment.
