Referrals for Lipedema Evaluation

Starting in 2026, we are updating how new patient lipedema evaluations are scheduled in our clinic.
Because awareness of lipedema has grown quickly through social media, online communities, and new medical information, we are seeing many more people reaching out directly to ask for lipedema assessments and treatment—often with a strong focus on surgery.
To make sure your care is safe, coordinated, and medically appropriate, all new lipedema consultations now require a referral from a licensed healthcare provider, such as a primary care clinician, OB‑GYN, or other specialist who knows your overall health history.
Why Do I Need a Referral?
This referral requirement helps us:
- Confirm that the evaluation is right for you at this time.
- Coordinate care with your existing medical team, including prior evaluations and laboratories.
- Follow a structured, step‑by‑step treatment plan that starts with conservative (non‑surgical) options shown to help many patients.

Why We Start With Conservative Measures
Our clinic follows current medical guidelines and insurance requirements that say conservative treatment must come first before we consider surgery.
Conservative (non‑surgical) treatment helps to:
- Reduce pain, tenderness, and heaviness.
- Control swelling and protect the skin.
- Improve walking, standing, and daily function.
- Support the lymphatic system and overall health.
Even when surgery is an option later, many surgeons and guidelines recommend that patients first establish healthy routines with conservative treatments, because these habits are still needed after surgery and can improve recovery.
Typical conservative treatment lasts at least 3 months, and sometimes up to 6 months, depending on your situation and your insurance plan.

We Can Help With Your Lipedema
If you are interested in an evaluation for lipedema in 2026 and beyond, please speak with your regular healthcare provider and ask them to send us a referral. Once we receive it, we will contact you to schedule the first visit and explain what to expect.
