We at Indiana Vein Specialists recognize the need to get away from all of your worldly concerns once in a while, which is why we have decided to sponsor the 3rd Annual Mom’s Nite Out to celebrate and appreciate the women of the Carmel and Fishers area. The event will provide an atmosphere of fun and relaxation, with Klove Radio, the Soma Intimates Fashion Show, and Jim Van Slambrook Slammer Jazz Trio providing the entertainment. Vendors such as the Carousel Winery, Pampered Chef, the Yoga Center, the David & Mary Salon and Spa, and Tony Sacco’s Coal Oven Pizza will be providing activities and giveaways.

Congratulating Diana Clauson’s Son and Supporting the Community’s Youth Athletics

On May 6th, at the Moose Lodge in Noblesville, Bryan Clauson (the son of our scheduling coordinator, Diana Clauson) will be supporting local youth athletics by holding a community day to support the Noblesville High School Hall of Fame. An up-and-coming star from the local area, he is celebrating his road to the Indy 500 by bringing everyone together for a day full of fun activities and celebration. The event will take place from 2 to 6pm and will include: a dunk tank, car show, and autograph session with the young star.

Indiana Vein Specialists wants to help support Bryan, Diana and the local youth athletics by helping promote awareness for the event. Bryan Clauson to make series debut at Indy 500

Bryan Clauson is a native of Noblesville, IN. For the past few years he has been making a name for himself among the national racing community by winning both USAC National Drivers Championships and the USAC National Midget Championship in 2010 and 2011. With over 26 USAC wins his entry into the Indy 500 promises to be an exceptional show, one that will provide the community of Noblesville with a lot to be proud of.

Bryan will be participating in the Indy 500 with his teammate, Josef Newgarden, as part of the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Team. When asked about the opportunity he is quoted as having said, “It’s almost surreal just talking about it. For me to be attempting to make the race with Sarah’s team is just phenomenal. With her background in sprint car and midget racing and her continued involvement at that level, this is just a good fit for me. Sponsoring Healthy Legs through Vein Disease Awareness

Indiana Vein Specialists is sponsoring the second annual Carmel Marathon, being held by the Carmel Road Racing Group, in order to promote better vein health throughout the local area. Kari and Dr. Schoonover participated in the event last year, with their sons, and decided that it was an excellent opportunity to provide support for the local community while educating athletes about the nature of varicose and spider veins.

The Fitness Expo takes place on Friday, April 20th from 10:00am – 9:00 pm. It is open to the community and is designed to provide a variety of health-related information to participants, their families, and all other community members to help educate them on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Indiana Vein Specialists will be providing information regarding varicose and spider veins, as well as free vein screenings. Nathan Watson has been with Indiana Vein Specialists since it opened, joining us from a diverse background that included serving in the Army and working at the VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a highly regarded member of the team and his passion for the job has brought him to the threshold of furthering his professional credentials in order to best serve all of our patients.

As a vascular sonographer, Nathan just finished the second component of testing for his RVT credential. This includes in-depth testing for Vascular Technology and previous testing for Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI). The process to successfully qualify for membership in the ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) as an RVT is long, and Nathan spent many nights studying to prepare for these tests. We want to take the time to acknowledge his efforts and make sure everyone is aware of the hard work he has put into continuing his professional training.

When you see Nathan in the office, take a moment and congratulate him on this outstanding achievement!

What does it mean to be an RVT?

One of the biggest questions we get at the office is “what do all these initials mean?” As part of our broader commitment to quality venous care, both Dr. Schoonover and Nathan are active members of the American Registry For Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Site: www.ardms.org). The tests taken and the information studied to gain membership into the ARDMS ensures that those who take it are current on the latest accepted practices in diagnosing venous medical conditions through the use of sonography. Acquiring this credential allows us to expand our knowledge and skills in order to ensure that we are providing our patients with the best care available.

Dr. Schoonover Promotes Awareness of Varicose Veins to Indy Runners at Butler University

On February 23rd we held a seminar for Indy Runners at Butler University’s Hinkle Field House. The event promoted awareness about potential venous problems that athletes may experience by explaining the potential symptoms they may experience while training for major races and events. It highlighted how compression stockings, mainly athletic recovery socks, could be used to enhance performance as well as lessen their risk of developing varicose veins as they continue to seek to improve their running. The seminar started with a presentation (part of which is included in this post) that explained the causes of varicose veins and how they can affect runners.

The members of Indy Runners were excited to learn how to protect themselves and actively engaged Dr. Schoonover about different aspects of vein disease, the treatment process, and what they should expect from custom fit compression stockings. From that conversation Dr. Schoonover wrote up several explanations that he wanted to post here for reference (see below). He believes educating people on their health is the best way to ensure that they can continue to enjoy their active lifestyles while minimizing the risks of developing vein disease. However, in recognizing that there are other factors contributing to the runners’ health, he offered free screenings to anyone who wanted to check their vein health and measured anyone who wanted to get fitted for athletic compression stockings.

A Little about Indy Runners

Indy Runners is a club, based out of Indianapolis, that promotes walking and running as healthy lifestyle activities for people in the area. The group supports members by providing opportunities for group runs/walks as well as providing information on upcoming events and competitions in the local area. With over 900 members they provide a fantastic way to reach out and join others in the pursuit of health through walking and running. They agreed to host Dr. Schoonover because they recognized how important education is to maintaining one’s health.

Varicose vein disease does not just affect the patient, it can affect the whole family.  When a loved one is in discomfort, the whole family hurts for them.  We don’t like seeing our family members in pain. We love when a patient shares with us how much better their legs are feeling.  It’s why we treat vein disease, our mission behind giving people “Better Options.  Healthier Legs.”

Over Christmas, one of the cards we received had something extra special in it.  The family members of a patient, three children in particular, sent us a letter thanking us for fixing their dad’s veins.  Just another reminder to us, that the Indiana Vein Specialists team is dedicated to treating our patients as members of our own “extended family.”  We take pride in our contributions to you and your family’s venous health care.

Earlier this month, at the request of a certain 1st grader, Flat Stanley came by to visit Dr. Schoonover and the team here at Indiana Vein Specialists. His visit brought smiles to the faces of our staff and patients as we gave him a tour of the office and provided him with his complimentary screening to see if he needed treatment. We took pictures of his adventures to share them with you.

Flat Stanley came to the office earlier in the morning with Kari Schoonover, in order to make sure he was on time for his appointment. To the left you can see him opening the door, trying to hurry Kari in behind him so that he would not be late. Flat Stanley knows there’s a fair amount of paperwork to be signed before he can get his consultation, including a consent form and medical history documents, so he wants to get in as early as possible to avoid making the nurses and doctors wait.

Once inside he talked with Diana Clauson, our scheduling coordinator, to make sure his appointment was in order and his paperwork was ready to be processed. Since he had filled most of it out online ahead of time through the Indiana Vein Specialists patient portal, she told him that he was “good to go.”  Dr. Schoonover would be out to escort him around the office and see him to his initial ultrasound. Flat Stanley sat down and made himself comfortable in the waiting area of the office, reading some magazines and talking with Diana to overcome his initial fears regarding varicose and spider veins treatment. She reassured him that the treatment, if necessary, was non-invasive with minimal pain. Flat Stanley looked greatly relieved to hear this and was once more ready to go through with the treatment.

Dr. Schoonover soon arrived and brought Flat Stanley around the office, stopping by to give a brief introduction to a patient, which included helpful information on varicose and spider veins, before bringing him to the screening area where he would go to get his ultrasound. Nathan Watson, our registered vascular technologist, scanned Flat Stanley’s legs in order to identify potential vein disease for treatment. Nathan helped Flat Stanley identify a potential problem that he would need to have treated as soon as possible. Since Flat Stanley would only be available that day he decided to have the treatment done in short order. Dr. Schoonover came back and took him to a private room for review of his history and a brief physical, explained to him the importance of treating vein disease and prepped him for the procedure. During preparation, a final check of Flat Stanley’s vitals was performed.  Dr. Schoonover performed an laser treatment for his larger varicose veins.  After that, Nurse Maggie Haley came to perform the spider vein treatment for the smaller surface veins.

Nurse Maggie performed the treatment and used a vein light to make sure no smaller veins were missed during the sclerotherapy (spider vein treatment) session. Once he was cleared, Flat Stanley left the treatment room knowing that he would be 100% in a couple of days. He had one final stop before leaving, which was to meet Natalie Gilman for his post-treatment documentation where he was taken through the process of submitting his claim to the insurance company and paying for all of his applicable fees for the visit.

After he was finished, Flat Stanley realized that getting treatment for vein disease was not nearly as scary, nor as painful, as he had first thought. With his first treatment complete and a follow up scheduled a few weeks out, Flat Stanley knew he’d be back to see our friendly staff. He’s eager to return, but has many plans for new adventures to occupy his time in between.

Dr. Jeffery Schoonover recently opened Indiana Vein Specialists, a medical practice committed to the non-surgical treatment of varicose vein disease and related disorders. Dr. Schoonover graduated from Michigan Technological University and received his medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He was chief resident for the Family Physicians Association at Flower Hospital and is Board-Certified in both family practice and phlebology. Before launching Indiana Vein Specialists, Dr. Schoonover was the regional medical director and staff physician at one of the largest vein clinics in the U.S. He also previously practiced family medicine in Yorktown, Indiana and spent four years in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Major.

Pain in the legs, restless leg syndrome, ankle swelling, muscle cramping, heaviness in the legs and itching can all be signs of vein disease. The symptoms may temporarily improve with leg elevation, pain meds or compression socks but they typically recur and can cause other significant health problems like sores and poor circulation. Heredity can play a role in varicose and spider veins as can pregnancy, hormonal changes or obesity. Up to 55 percent of women and 45 percent of men have some form of vein disease.

Indiana Vein Specialists offers state of the art vein treatment for those who suffer the pain and embarrassment of varicose veins and who do not want vein surgery. Dr. Schoonover says that unfortunately many people do not seek vein disease treatment or delay it for five to ten years. Today there are many corrective treatment options available that do not involve surgery and hospitalization. “Until recently, surgical vein stripping was the standard treatment for varicose veins,” said Dr. Schoonover. “Now we use Endovenous laser treatment, a minimally invasive procedure done in the office.”  During this state-of-the art treatment ultrasound is used to guide a fiber optic laser catheter into the affected vein, which then heats and seals it. Once the vein is closed, blood reroutes to healthy veins. Most people can return to their normal activity the next day. Sclerotherapy is another type of treatment that can be performed for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons.
